Hello, SSS Racers.

The SSS Singlehanded Farallones is the original race that launched what became the SSS. This year we’re racing on May 11, a week and a half from now.

Sign up at https://jibeset.net/JACKY000.php?RG=T005327570 .

Hello, all.

Thank you for registering for SSS Singlehanded Farallones. This is an important race for the SSS.

It’s also a race where safety should be on everyone’s minds even more than usual. Races to the Farallones or Lightship have resulted in fatalities in 1982 (six deaths), 1999, 2008 (two deaths) and 2012 (five deaths). That’s 14 people in the last 42 years.

To boost safety, we’re requiring boats transmit their position on AIS this year. BAMA reported some “teething troubles” in their race, so I’ve posted steps on how to check your AIS works on the notice board. Please check yours is working before leaving the dock.

We’re also asking skippers “familiarize themselves” with the accident reports for the 1982 and 2012 disasters. You may have read those before, but it might be good to refresh your memory. You’ll find the links in the “Safety References” addendum.

And as usual since the Low Speed Chase Accident, we want everyone to keep at least 1000′ from the Island. Look at the chartlet in the Safety References, and the NOAA chart of SE Farallon Island. Both are on the notice board.

We’ll have a skipper’s meeting over Zoom on Wednesday evening. I’ll send out the invitation on Tuesday evening to all skippers registered by then.

We hope you have a fun, and SAFE, race this year.

Thank you for racing with the SSS.
